THE DIALOGUES
The Dialogues are chances to meet and discuss the opportunities that are born from the synergy between art, science and enterprise. At the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, the Dialogues offer innovative and concrete experiences which will stimulate, inspire, and open participants to the challenges facing the worlds of research, business, and civil society. At the Dialogues, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, creative professionals, and experts on the relevant themes will participate in each meeting. The goal is to present some of the more significant experiences in several selected areas and to identify opportunities for connections between enterprise, scientists and artists related to the express needs of the territory and its inhabitants.

DO EAT! EDIBLE WORLDS
3 MAY 2013
– 5pm Workshop
From the seedbed to the plate: tips and techniques to grow a garden at home
– 6pm Dialogue

All over the world, the dinner table has always been the place that we as humans meet to share a piece of our lives. Eating is a cultural experience that involves all of our senses and reminds of us sensations, places, and times past. Caught between culture and the bulldozer of global commercial networks, food is also the cause of conflicts due to food crises, population growth and GMOs.

The synergy of science, technology and design can create better, more virtuous food supply chains with the ability to preserve and valorize natural resources and local cultures. These new systems can produce high quality food while demonstrating the capacity of diverse products and guaranteeing the health of citizens and the environment. From food design to attention to packaging, from organic products in agriculture to gastronomical “slow-food”, from biotechnologies to locally produced food, the keyword is equilibrium: socio-environmental, nutritional and aesthetic. What foods can preserve biodiversity, taste and aesthetics?

The “edible worlds” are therefore the central theme of this dialogue. The invited guest speakers are:

  • Filippo Ongaro, Doctor, writer, and scientific divulgator, Filippo Ongaro was the doctor of the astronauts at the European Space Agency (ESA) and has collaborated with NASA and the Russian Space Agency.
  • Andrea Nicolello-Rossi, President of Fairtrade Italy in 2010. Trained as community psychologis and expert in participatory processes, Nicolello-Rossi counts on extensive experience in Venetian governmental agencies.
  • Giuliano Canella, head of the purchase and sale department for the supermarket chain Alì spa
  • Diana Maria Zilioli, responsible for Serra dei Giardini – Cooperativa Sociale Nonsoloverde

Before the dialogue, one workshop will be organised: From the seedbed to the plate: tips and techniques to grow a garden at home thanks to Cooperativa Sociale Nonsoloverde
